Quite in keeping with Tea Board predictions early this year, crop performance 2010 is nearing all time record readings. The Sri Lanka Tea Board through their communication dated 16th December, received by us yesterday indicated end November crop performance was a cumulative sum of 302,451,198 kilos. Highest contributor to this performance was the low growns predominantly comprised of the Tea Small Holder tracts of land. General Manager Tea Small Holdings Development Authority A. Nandasena said this was an ongoing phenomenon that with steadily increasing prices for green leaf, corresponding increase in cultivated extents too were part of low grown innovation and incentive to open larger land tracts to grow tea. He conceded that Low growns, as reported by the Tea Board, were distinctly productive and kept pace with increased earnings of these growers. Low grown were mostly small holdings who contributed to prosperity of the Tea industry.

Reverting to Tea Board information although November crop was below crop harvested November last year down approximately 3.2 million, the minus variance did not drastically affect overall performance. To date increase in crop was recorded at about 37.6 million kilos or 14.2 % in the plus factor quotient.

Elevational increases the Tea Board report said was mainly in Low grown performances . Low grown increases were about 21 million, mid elevation was up 10 million, and highs had plus factors of about 5.6 million.

Indicators as informed by the Tea board recorded both Low elevation, and Mid elevation crop contributed more significantly to crop progress, than high grown. The high growns were predominantly large Regional Plantation Company holdings.

To-date performance of Green Tea was encouraging. More so that Green Tea was now sold at the auctions. At 2.9 million kilos to end November was distinctly better than 2009 performance, which was 2.1 million kilos.

Expectations are that end December performance would be the best ever. Weather not being the spoiler such predictions are now very real.
