In response to high demand and a persistent need to produce multi-talented professionals in the business world, the Informatics Institute of Technology, a pioneer education institute in Sri Lanka together with Melbourne based project management consultancy organisation, Innova Strategies, launched the country's first ever Diploma in Project Management.

The course basically aims at professionals who have a certain degree of experience in the field to improve their competency in project management and thereby accelerate their careers. The diploma also offers school leavers the opportunity to venture into the field by offering them exemptions to a Master's program in project management to be held in September 2009.

The course will equip students with a qualification recognised at international levels which will lead to the world's most recognised project management qualification - Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. To meet the global standards, the program will be aligned with the PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) and will be conducted exclusively by PMI PMP certified trainers.

The diploma will expose students to the tools and techniques implemented in successful organizations on a global scale, to manage projects and also train them with a high competency level to be effected across multiple industries.

Informatics Institute of Technology currently offers undergraduate and post graduate degrees in Sri Lanka through the University of Keele and University of Westminister, UK. The training classes are to function on an enhanced interactive level with a maximum of 30 per class.

The course is designed to provide a formal approach to project management with plenty of practical exercises and case studies. In this course the participants will be provided with an opportunity to hone their skills and learn 'best-practice' methodologies in project management. The course will consist of 12 lessons delivered in 6 weeks. Each lesson is fully illustrated with step-by-step diagrams and course notes. It is a hands-on training programme and the participants will be supplied with tools and techniques to manage projects effectively.

Amongst lecturers for the diploma is Dr. Madhu Fernando, PMP and the resource panel consists of PMI USA Certified Project Management Professionals; Dr. Ravi Koggalage, Mr. Ajith Ranasinha, and Mr. Aruna Kooragamage. The training program is designed to take the participants through the complete process of project management from inception to the conclusion of a project. It will cover the most important factors in making projects successful, and building a successful project organization to facilitate better project management.

Some of its main objectives include Identifying and managing requirements from the inception to the conclusion; How to make things happen within the given scope, time, budget, quality and other project constraints; Making good project decisions, turning ideas in to reality through innovative strategy implementation; What to do when things go wrong with proper risk management practices, and learn to manage changes with a proper change control system and working with people, leading the teams and stakeholder management.
