British visas for sportspersons, entertainers too

The British High Commission yesterday announced that commencing late November it would issue British visas to cover sportsmen, sportswomen and entertainers.

Earlier, visas were issued for business, tourism, sponsored family members and engagement with foreign communities abroad. This Visitor Consultation was first published in December 2007 and the proposals for reforms of the visitor consultation was published in June this year.

The new scheme is in recognition of the important contribution these individuals make to British cultural and sporting life, it said.

"This proposal is part of the British Government’s review of the short-term migration system for visitors, to underpin the UK as a destination of choice for business and visitors while deterring those who would seek to abuse the immigration system.

The aim is to ensure that the UK stays open and attractive to business and remains top destination in Europe for inward investment(and second globally only to the US)," the High Commission said.
