ALARMING DRUG USERS!

Alarming rise in drug users - Tay Bian How
Sarath Malalasekera

Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Consultant Tay Bian How, cautioned the public about the rising use of narcotics, addressing the 'Parents Against Drugs' conference held at the BMICH recently.

"It is rather alarming that approximately 208 million people or 4.96 per cent of the world's population aged 15 to 64 have used illicit drugs at least once in the last 12 months. Cannabis remained the most prevalent drug of choice contributing 3.9 per cent with 165.6 million people using it while, opiate type drugs including heroin made up 0.7 per cent with 28.5 million users.

It is even more alarming to note that the lifespan of heroin users on average is around 25 years. A recent study in the USA looked at the fate of 581 California men who, from 1962 to 1964, were mandated by court to enter heroin addiction treatment. Their average age was 25. By 1997, 282 of the men had died, at an average age of 47.

A research conducted by the NIDA has proven that heroin use could reduce longevity. It will not just reduced longevity but drug abuse problems are among the most serious problems facing parents and children today. Drug problems affect family, friends, children and the community at large,"he said.

How emphasised that today's gathering of parents against drugs organised by the Organisation for Comradeship and Friendly Support which is a member of 'Mithuru Mithuro' movement underscored the fact that we are not alone in the fight against the drug scourge. It also strengthens the importance of family as the guiding and potent force for drug use prevention.

Ten observations for parents to prevent drug abuse:

1. Nurture the children's pride and remind them of their worth.

2. Reinforce what children already know about drugs and its consequences.

3. Praise the courage, strength and determination of children not to use or be involved in drugs.

4. Talk to children about the daily media images of drugs and violence in the community.

5. Encourage children to tell you about their hopes and dreams.

6. Give children your time and attention.

7. Set a good example. What you do influences your children.

8. Tell children about friends and neighbours like you who volunteer time and talent in helping youth.

9. Strengthen the children's sense of being proud of your family and always uphold the good image at all times.

10. Get involved with drug demand reduction activities. Your community needs you ! The children need you.

the CP Drug Consultant congratulated all for their determination and involvement in combating the drug menace.
